Sunshine Sunday Installment 1 - When I Grow Up

Sunshine Sunday Installment 1 - When I Grow Up Please indulge my musical theater nerd for the very first edition of Sunshine Sunday. When wondering what to write about for this monumental post, I thought immediately of the song Tomorrow from Annie. As a little girl in the early 80s, I was Annie obsessed, just like a whole lot of other little girls in the early 80s. It was the first show I saw, and I just couldnt get enough of the movie the soundtrack. Unfortunately, my height kept me from ever playing Annie (I was the tallest kid in my school in 5th grade), when everyone finally caught up to me I was way too old to play this little orphan. Thankfully my parents bought me the dress the wig the movie, so I was never stopped from belting Tomorrow whenever I freakin wanted. So, to put some Sunshine in your Sunday, I wanted to give you the musical theater tunes that make me the happiest, starting with Tomorrow: Snow White was my first lead role at the tender age of 10, so hearing Someday My Prince Will Come always makes me smile: Getting to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz was also a dream role for me, and I got to do it in summer camp one year. Somewhere Over the Rainbow will always hold a special place in my heart: I did Bye Bye Birdie in both 6th 9th grade, so I feel like I know it in out. Believe you me, you havent experience real theater until you see a 12 year old play a 60-something year old mother, like I did playing Mae Peterson in 1990. Mae Peterson was a blessing a curse, as it was the first time I think The Bug really bit me. Making an auditorium full of people laugh for the first time is an extremely dangerous thing. Put on a Happy Face, though, reminds me of a great story Luke told me about him playing Albert Peterson in   high school (no teasing), and the Sad Face Girl he had to cheer up was just released from the local hospital for cutting her wrists. So, yeah. Wow, I just bought the room down. Im gonna play the video anyway. (Disclaimer: The Dick Van Dyke version from the original movie aint on YouTube, so heres George Costanza. If you havent seen it, rent it now!) Im sure Ill be adding many other songs to this installment as the weeks go on, but Id love to hear your Sunshine Songs, musical theater related or not. Im off to brunch now, which always puts some Sunshine in my Sunday!
